TEST NOTES AND ANSWERS There are nine three-page unit tests. They cover the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills and test the grammar and vocabulary presented in each core unit. The unit tests can be administered at the end of each unit. There are three term tests. They can be administered at the end of units 3, 6 and 9. There is also one end-of-year test.
James: No, she loves them! She’s got a birdfeeder. It hangs from a tree near our fence. I think that’s why so many birds come into our garden. 5 Sam: Do you think your idea is going to work? James: I hope so. I’m planning to plant some seeds after I build the scarecrow. The idea is that it scares the birds and Mum gets her raspberries. 6 Sam: Great! But there’s one thing you need to think about, James: What’s your scarecrow going to wear? Answers

But snails are more interesting because they look so strange. 3 Man: And what about centipedes? Girl: They’re interesting – they’ve got a hundred legs. I don’t think there are any in our garden. 4 Man: But there are probably lots of other insects. Girl: Yes, especially in summer. I’m a bit scared of spiders. 5 Man: Actually, spiders are arachnids, not insects. Insects are things like beetles. Girl: Oh, yes, that’s right. We learnt that at school. 6 Man: So what insects do you like? Girl: Ladybirds, because they’re so pretty! Everyone loves them, don’t they? Answers

It’s a surprise for Mum. She’s always complaining that the birds eat all the seeds she plants. 3 Sam: Do you want any help? James: Thanks. We need a wheelbarrow for the sticks. I prefer things like that to those still-life drawings that John Canter is famous for. The colours are so dull. Boy: I agree, Sarah. I think his work is really boring. My favourite kind of art is photography, which some people say isn’t art at all. Woman: You’d love Caroline Kitchen’s stuff. Her photos are always bright and colourful – and they’re always round, for some reason. Boy: I also like paintings of city skylines or distant horizons, which are really wide and make you feel like you’re part of the picture. Woman: Really? I’m not sure. I think paintings like that are a bit cold. Boy: So what kind of art do you like? Woman: I prefer art which is useful and beautiful, like Tom Franklin’s kitchen objects. He makes things like bowls that are smooth and shiny inside but with a very bumpy surface outside. I love that. Boy: You should go to the Carlton Gallery. There’s a woman called Jenna Smith who produces great pottery. She makes plates and things that always look wet and shiny, but they’re actually dry. Woman: Jenna Smith? I’ve never heard of her. Woman: She likes quiet places, doesn’t she? Man: Normally, yes. But this hotel is on a main road, so it’ll probably be very noisy. 3 Girl: Have you ever stayed anywhere historic? Boy: Yes. I stayed in a castle once. Girl: That sounds amazing. Boy: It was, but it was freezing because there was no heating. 4 Woman: The worst place I’ve ever been to on holiday was a small town. Man: What was wrong with it? Woman: The house was OK, but the town was deserted. There wasn’t anything to do. 5 Girl 1: Where are you going on holiday this year, Olivia? Girl 2: We always go somewhere rural as we don’t like crowded, urban places with lots of tourists. We haven’t decided where exactly, though. 6 Man: I love mountain-climbing, but I live in a very flat part of the country. Woman: So how do you manage to do it, Tim? Where do you practise? Man: Well, every year I find a new mountainous region to visit on holiday. I always go with someone because it can be dangerous doing it on your own. Answers

Woman: Are you looking forward to your camping trip to Green Spring, Leah? Girl: Yes, lots! I can’t believe it’s 1st May – just one week before we set off. Woman: You’ll have a great time. Who are you sharing your tent with? Girl: My two best friends, Carrie and Rosie. We all get on really well. There are usually four in each tent, but they think we’ll be more comfortable with three. Woman: Is it expensive? I think Highfield costs about £100 per week. Girl: It’s a bit more than that. Mum said it was £150 for the week, but that includes all the activities. Woman: How long are you going for? Girl: A week. We’ll be back on 15th May. Mrs Taylor says the coach will bring us back at 9 pm. Woman: Is Mrs Taylor your teacher?

Girl: Where did you get your recipe? Boy: From my grandmother. 4 Boy: My grandparents lived in China for a few years when they were younger. Girl: Really? That’s exciting. Boy: Not when they have beansprouts with everything. Any food can be boring if you eat too much of it. 5 Girl: Last year, my aunt was on a diet and she ate lots of cucumbers. It’s important to eat enough vegetables but you also need to eat a variety of things. My aunt ate too many cucumbers. She got bored – and now she won’t eat them! 6 Boy: We need to eat healthily. Actor: I don’t think so. Some actors might ask people to tie their shoelaces, but not me! Interviewer: Who does your hair and make-up? Actor: I have my hair styled but I put on my own make-up. Interviewer: What about your nails? Actor: I have my nails painted by Janie, our stylist, because she’s really good at doing it. And it gives me more time to learn my lines. When I was younger, I used to work in small theatres. There weren’t enough people to help, so I used to mend my own costumes! I don’t do that now. Interviewer: Have you ever dyed your hair to act a part in a play? Actor: Yes, my hair often needs to be a different colour. The first things you see are a pair of enormous pillars made of stone. Then you walk into a courtyard. There’s a fountain in the middle that still works. Boy 2: Water comes out? Boy 1: Yes, and people throw coins into it. There used to be a statue as well. Boy 2: Are there lots of mosaics? Boy 1: There’s only one mosaic, just inside the front door. You can look at it but you can’t walk on it. Boy 2: Can’t you go inside at all, then? Boy 1: Yes, you can, because the floors in the rest of the house aren’t made of mosaics. They’re just tiles. There are some stairs outside the house. You go up these to the first floor. There isn’t a lot of furniture, but there’s a huge balcony. I stood on it and looked down at everyone in the courtyard. Kate: Hi, Mario. So this is your new home! Was it really exciting when you and Donna finally managed to buy your first house? Mario: Yes and no. I love working around the house, but only if I’m using a drill. I don’t get excited about vacuum cleaners! Kate: What was the first thing you did to the house? Mario: We cleaned it! Well, Donna’s mother, Mrs Bennett, cleaned it. She wanted to help us and she has made it all look much nicer with her vacuum cleaner.

Kate: That was good of her. Mario: She’s a great cook, too. Donna hates cooking. Kate: But she is great with a needle and thread. Mario: I know. She made all the curtains! Kate: What are you going to do with the garden? Mario: Nothing, at the moment. Our neighbour, Mr Beecham, has got an electric saw. He has offered to cut down that tree out there. Kate: Oh, why isn’t the fridge working? Mario: I think it needs a new plug. I’ve asked my friend Ben to look at it. He’s an electrician. Kate: Great! So what can I do? Mario: You can put the kettle on. It’s in that box, next to the iron.

Julia: I used to watch a lot of television when I was little. I liked watching cartoons, of course, but also comedy shows – even when I didn’t understand why everyone was laughing! My favourite TV programmes were the ones about nature. Most people find it exciting to watch the big animals, like the lions and tigers, but I used to like finding out about beetles and spiders. Everybody ignores them because they’re small and ugly, but I think they’re fascinating! Once, I decided to keep a centipede in a jar in the greenhouse so that I could watch it. I didn’t realise that it wouldn’t be able to breathe. It died and I was really angry with myself. My parents bought a dog, called Rex, so I grew more interested in dogs. We kept Rex in the house, not in the greenhouse. He lived for a long time! Answers

I was so worried about the play and all the lines I had to learn that I thought I should go to bed early. Hannah: Don’t worry. Of course you had to rehearse for the show, and I’m glad you managed to remember all your lines. Did you get the ‘good luck’ card from Karen? Ben: Oh, I thought that was from your mum.
