Overview
2.1 Introduction The Abis Crossed Pair Diagnosis feature enables the BSC to automatically detect transmission cable faults on the Abis interface and to promptly generate alarms for crossed pair connections. This reduces the duration in which transmission faults last and subsequent user complaints.

3 Technical Description
Technical Description
The Abis Crossed Pair Diagnosis feature enables the BSC to detect crossed pair connections of E1/T1 cables in Abis over time division multiplexing (TDM) mode. TRANDETSWITCH (BSC6900,BSC6910) controls whether to enable this feature. When services become abnormal because of incorrect cable connections, this feature enables the BSC to quickly identify a transmission exception according to the reported alarm and set this link to the faulty state. In this way, the BSC no longer allocates services to the link. This feature enables the BSC to quickly detect the following crossed pair connections: l
All crossed pair connections between E1/T1 cables that connect ports on the same BTS to the BSC
l
Most of the crossed pair connections between E1/T1 cables that connect different BTSs to the BSC except in the following scenario: E1/T1 cables connect two ports with the same port number on two BTSs to the BSC and the two BTSs have the same model and configuration
With this feature, the timeslot allocation algorithm is adjusted to ensure that each E1/T1 cable carries at least one signaling link. Then, the BSC determines whether the transmission over an E1/T1 cable is normal by checking the signaling links over this E1/T1 cable. If the signaling links over the E1/T1 cable can be set up successfully, the transmission over the E1/T1 cable is normal. If the signaling links over the E1/T1 cable fail to be set up, the transmission over the E1/T1 cable is faulty, for example, the link connection fails or crossed pair connection exists. The principle for signaling link detection is as follows: Link Access Procedure on the D channel (LAPD) is the underlying protocol of signaling links over the Abis interface, and both the BSC and BTS allocate a Terminal Equipment Identifier (TEI) to each LAPD link. LAPD negotiation over an LAPD link is successful only when the TEIs allocated by the BSC and the BTS are the same. A BTS allocates a unique TEI to each LAPD link under the BTS. Therefore, the BSC can detect all transmission failures of E1/T1 links inside a BTS. There is a probability of about 1/72 for LAPD links between different BTSs and the BSC to have the same TEI. Therefore, the BSC can detect most transmission failures of E1/T1 links between different BTSs and the BSC. However, if two BTSs have the same model and configuration, and if two LAPD links are allocated the same TEI, the BSC cannot detect the crossed pair connection between the two E1/ T1 cables carrying the two LAPD links. 3 Technical Description
When detecting a transmission failure of a signaling link, the BSC reports ALM-28006 Radio Signaling Link Disconnected and sets all channels on the transceiver (TRX) that the faulty signaling link serves to the faulty state. If another physical-layer alarm on an E1/T1 link exists, the BSC does not report ALM-28006 Radio Signaling Link Disconnected because it reports only physical-layer alarms.

4 Engineering Guidelines
Engineering Guidelines
4.1 When to Use Abis Crossed Pair Diagnosis It is recommended that the Abis Crossed Pair Diagnosis feature be used in Abis over TDM mode.
4.2 Required Information Before deploying this feature, collect the following information: l
Status of physical transmission
l
Status of E1/T1 ports connected to the BTS
To check the status of the E1/T1 ports, run the DSP E1T1 command. Ensure that physical transmission and E1/T1 ports are normal to prevent a large number of transmission-related alarms after this feature takes effect. If any E1/T1 link is faulty, check whether this link will be used later. If the E1/T1 link will not be used, run the RMV BTSCONNECT command to remove the link. If the E1/T1 link will be used and the fault cannot be rectified currently, run the SET BTSFORBIDTS command to inhibit all timeslots on the E1/T1 link. After the fault in the E1/T1 link is cleared, resume the timeslots.

4.3.2 Activation Using MML Commands On the BSC LMT, run the MOD BTS command. In this step, set Abis Transmission Cable Detection Switch to ON(On).
MML Command Examples MOD BTS: IDTYPE=BYID, BTSID=0, TRANDETSWITCH=ON;
Using the CME NOTE
When configuring the Abis Crossed Pair Diagnosis feature on the CME, you must perform a single configuration first, and then perform batch modifications if required. You must perform a single configuration for a parameter before batch modifications of the parameter. You are advised to perform batch modifications before logging out of the parameter setting interface.
Step 1 Configure a single object on the CME. (CME single configuration) Set parameters on the CME configuration interface according to the operation sequence described in Table 4-2. For the method of performing the CME single configuration, see CME Single Configuration Operation Guide. Step 2 (Optional) Modify objects in batches on the CME. (CME batch modification center) icon on the To modify objects, such as BSCs, BTSs, cells, and TRXs, in batches, click the CME configuration interface to start the batch modification wizard. For the method of performing batch modifications through the CME batch modification center, press F1 on the wizard interface to obtain online help. ----End

This helps maintenance engineers to locate problems in a timely manner. If this function is disabled, the BSC may only allocate RSLs for some E1/T1 links when allocating Abis transmission timeslots. Note: To ensure that no extra Abis transmission timeslot is occupied when the Abis transmission cable detection function is enabled, the BSC multiplexes multiple RSLs to a 64 kbit/s timeslot based on the multiplexing mode.
