Foreword Aircraft Purchase Agreements stipulate that Technical Publications shall comply with ATA (Air Transport Association of America) Specifications. The standards described in the Airbus Reference Language document set shall be observed. Where appropriate the principles of Simplified English (AECMA) shall be used. The Airbus Reference Language document set comprises the following ABDs: - ABD0036 - Numbering/Naming Covers general numbering and naming rules for aircraft functions and products. Includes a separate appendix of reference catalogs of standard terms. - ABD0037 - Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) Lists the abbreviations approved for use within the Airbus environment. - ABD0046 - Units of Measurement Provides guidelines for the selection and use of units, symbols and procedures for conversion and rounding. - ABD0056 - Glossary of Airbus Terms and Expressions (GATE) Lists all the terms which are used in Airbus matters together with their meaning (in the Airbus environment) to ensure a common understanding between AIB disciplines and offer a reference for relations with Airworthiness Authorities, Customers, Members/Associated Partners and Suppliers/Sub-Contractors. Introduction

General This ABD provides rules for coherent definition and application of Numbering and Naming requirements for aircraft functions and constituents. The objective is to obtain maximum consistency: - From the Design stage to the Product Support stage. - Between documents and what is actually on the aircraft (labels/placards/markings and messages shown on display units). - Between Aircraft Projects (starting from A340/A330) to facilitate Cross Qualification for Crew and Maintenance Personnel. This consistency is essential not only for our Customers but also for Airbus Industrie and the Members (due to the wide use of Electronic Data Processing - EDP). Where directives already exist to cover the above requirements this ABD simply refers to the relevant directives. Otherwise the rules are laid down in this ABD.

General An aircraft, for the purpose of this ABD, is composed of: - data and documentation for definition, description and justification, - the aircraft itself which comprises functions and the techniques, (i.e.: the aircraft constituent items), used to fulfil these functions.

Identification of Functions and Techniques Functions are identified by a title and a reference number in accordance with ATA Specification 100 (refer to Section 4). Techniques have basically two types of identification: - a Functional Designation together with a Functional Identification Number (FIN). These are used when an item is considered only from a functional aspect. They usually relate to items of equipment or to Standard Items with a significant function, - a Technological Description together with a Part Number. These are used when an item is considered from a technological aspect. They are used for all types of items. Note: Technological Descriptions and Part Numbers can be allocated by Airbus Members and Associated Partners. In this case the descriptions are referred to as Standardized Technological Descriptions. They can also be allocated by suppliers, in which case they are referred to as Suppliers' Technological Descriptions.

Definitions Functional Designation (refer to Chapter 6) Title describing the function of equipment/components or significant items of an aircraft system/circuit/installation. Standardized Technological Description (refer to Chapter 6) The Standardized Technological Description is a term used to describe the basic technical function of an item. It must be consistent with the basic part of the Functional Designation. Specification Reference and Title For items defined by means of a Technical Specification (refer to ABD0010/0200), the title of the Technical Specification shall be the Standardized Technological Description, written in the normal order of words in English, eg: Retractable Landing Light, not Light-Retractable, Landing. Suppliers' Technological Description If, in response to a specification, a supplier can offer an item which is in his current range and can be supplied as an "off the shelf" item it may retain its identification. In such cases the following descriptions can apply: - a Functional Designation, - a Standardized Technological Description, - a Supplier's Technological Description.

Language and Abbreviations All text shall be in the English language using aeronautical terminology in common use e.g. as used by the ATA The reference documents to be used are Webster's Third New international Dictionary of the English Language or Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the Catalogs of Standard Terms to be found in the appendix to this ABD. The use of abbreviations is permitted. The rules governing their use and catalogs of abbreviations approved for use are included in ABD0037 - Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook.

Aircraft Project Identification At the beginning of a new Aircraft Project, Airbus Industrie identifies the new aircraft by means of a reference, comprising the Type, Series, Model, Variant and Configuration: - Refer to Aircraft Configuration Management Rules (ACMR) and ABD0056 Chapter 4. The allocated reference is recorded in the Aircraft Certification Register for Aircraft Types and Models.

Aircraft Functions

General An aircraft consists of: - functions which are necessary for the aircraft to meet its specification, - techniques by which the functions are achieved. Functions are numbered and named in general accordance with ATA Spec. No. 100 - SPECIFICATION FOR MANUFACTURERS TECHNICAL DATA, generally known as "ATA 100".

ATA Specification 100 - Background First issued in 1956, the objective of ATA Specification 100 is to standardize the presentation of data provided by manufacturers to airlines, so that the same information can be found in generally the same place and form whatever the aircraft and/or the manufacturer. As regards functions, the objective is achieved by a standard system of breaking the aircraft down into its functions, and of numbering and naming them. This system is known as the ATA breakdown system. The numbers are known as ATA References, and provide a unique addressing system. ATA Specification 100 breaks an aircraft down into its functions as follows: - Systems (known as Chapters in related publications). - Sub-Systems (or Sections). - Sub-Sub-Systems (or Sub-Sections). - Units (or Subjects). Each function group has a standard 6-digit number (the ATA Ref.) and a name (known as a title). These are specified in ATA Specification 100 as far as the sub-system level, common to any aircraft. From the sub-sub-system level, each individual manufacturer continues the allocation to suit the aircraft involved. The breakdown system is based on an alphabetical sequence using titles allocated to Systems, eg: Air Conditioning Chapter 21-00-00 Auto Flight Chapter 22-00-00 Communications Chapter 23-00-00 Within each System are Sub-Systems. For example, ATA Chapter 21 deals with the Air Conditioning System and provides for a range of sub-systems, eg: Compression ATA Ref. 21-10-00 Distribution ATA Ref. 21-20-00 Each Sub-System (eg: Distribution ATA Ref. 21-20-00) is further divided into Sub-Sub-Systems. "Distribution" (21-20-00) provides a number of Sub-Sub-Systems including: Cabin Air Distribution ATA Ref. 21-21-00 and Recirculation Cockpit Air Ventilation ATA Ref. 21-22-00 Each Sub-Sub-System (referred to as circuits or installations), comprises Units (components). The ATA Specification 100 and Airbus The ATA Specification 100 itself states that the standards it establishes are "recommendatory in nature" but that they "become mandatory to the extent they may be incorporated into the purchase agreements executed between the individual suppliers and the individual operators". Airbus General Purchase Agreements stipulate general compliance with ATA Specification 100 for contractual Technical Publications, therefore Airbus is committed to following ATA Specification 100. For this reason and in order to achieve maximum consistency between Airbus data, (both that supplied to customers and that used as a basis for the data supplied to customers), and between this data and the aircraft itself, a specific Airbus ATA Breakdown is established at XX-XX-00 level at the outset of each new Program/Project, and is later completed at XX-XX-XX level. Each Sub-Sub-System is allocated: - A circuit identification consisting of two letters. - Its own ATA Ref. (XX-XX-00). - A title (Refer to section 4-7). Each unit within a Sub-Sub-System is allocated: - A Functional Item Number (FIN) - Ref. ABD0004. - An associated ATA Ref. (XX-XX-XX). - A title (Refer to Section 4-7). The resulting Breakdown is used as a basis for the numbering of drawings and documents. Examples include: - Aircraft Standard Specification. - Detail Specifications. - Technical Design Directives (TDD). - Mechanical drawings. - Electrical drawings. - Electrical wires. - Equipment specifications. - System Description Notes (SDN). - Airframe Certification Documentation (ACD). - Certification documentation. - Documents/data for relations with customers (eg: Technical Publications). The remainder of this chapter gives the details of when, how and by whom ATA numbers and names are to be allocated.

Airbus ATA Breakdown Establishment Sequence (Refer to Section 6-3) The sequence of activities leading to the establishment of the ATA Breakdown is as follows: A - Identification of all functions at XX-X0-00 and XX-XX-00 level, at the outset of each Airbus project, or as and when new functions are introduced. B - Identification of all items required to fulfill the functions. Allocation of FINs and associated Functional Designations (Refer to ABD0004 - Definition Dossier, for numbering rules, and ABD0036 for functional designations). C - Allocation of functional ATA References (XX-XX-11 to XX-XX-99) and related titles for those detail functions (items) considered to be significant for maintenance.

General The responsibility for ATA Specification 100 Breakdown establishment is split into two major levels. - XX-X0-00 and XX-XX-00 (Sub-System and Sub-Sub-System: Circuit/Installation). - XX-XX-XX (Significant Item). The Design Offices have overall technical responsibility. Maximum agreement shall be reached between the Members involved. Outstanding decisions shall be taken during the System Interface activities.

XX-X0-00 and XX-XX-00 - Overall control: For mechanical items - Non-Specific Design Work (NSDW) level 1. For electrical/electromechanical items - NSDW level 2. - Allocation: NSDW Airbus Member Design Office (see worksharing document, Report 6, applicable to the relevant aircraft project). - General coordination for harmonization: Aerospatiale Matra. In case of problems, the final decision lies with AIB and will be taken by TF7-WG1.

Rules for Allocating ATA Refs

XX-00-00 and XX-X0-00 At the beginning of an Aircraft Project, numbering at 3-digit level shall be in conformity with the ATA Specification 100 at the revision status defined by the relevant project management. If the aircraft technology is not catered for by this Revision of the ATA Specification 100 a request for amendment to the specification shall be submitted to the ATA/AIA Committee as follows: 1. At the earliest stage possible (i.e. when the general design concepts have been established with reasonable certainty), the Design Organization must submit requests for additions or modifications, with justification, to the AIB Customer Services - Technical Publications Organization Breakdown Coordinator, with a copy to the other coordinators. The request should preferably include a proposal of the text to be included in the Specification 100. 2 . AIB then submit the proposal to the AIA/ATA committee at the earliest opportunity. 3 . The proposal can be considered to be usable after acceptance by AIB. EMBED ATB Coordinator

A 6 digit ATA Ref. is allocated to those items which require specific airframe documentation i.e. A - Those governed by the Maintenance Review Board (MRB) for scheduled actions. B - Those governed by the Maintenance Planning Document (MPD) which is an implementation of the MRB. C - Those subject to GO/NO-GO/GO-IF classification in the Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) and the Configuration Deviation List (CDL). D - Those governed by the various onboard monitoring systems. In this case, any change to the ATA Reference or Functional Designation of the Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) may only be made after Design Office agreement to modify the software of the corresponding computers (involves raising an aircraft Modification). All LRUs monitored by the central warning and maintenance systems shall be identified by the code letter "M" (monitored) in the DB ATA REF. E - Additional Line Replaceable Units/Items (LRU/LRI). F - Those requiring a special/specific maintenance action. Note: The Breakdown does not allocate ATA References to Component Maintenance Manuals th th (Vendor, Manufacturer). These ATA References, from 4 to 6 digit, are the responsibility of the Supplier.

Systems/Sub-systems (XX-00-00/XX-X0-00) Titles shall be in general conformity with ATA Specification 100 at the applicable Revision status. Minor deviations are however, acceptable, if justified. eg: 27-10-00 is AILERON AND TAB in ATA Specification 100. In the Airbus ATA 100 Breakdown, it is simply AILERON, as there are no tabs on the ailerons. Titles for additions or modifications to the ATA Specification 100 shall be included in the proposals to the AIA/ATA Committee (Refer to Paragraph 4-6). They shall be precise, concise and fit in with the ATA style.

Items Identified by a FIN The title of the ATA Reference shall be consistent with the functional designation given to the item involved (refer to chapter 6 for the rules governing functional designations). This means that: - The main word shall be indicated first, followed by a dash and then the function on the aircraft, plus the complementary modifier where really necessary. But - Abbreviations shall not be used unless the item is commonly referred to by its abbreviation (see rules for abbreviations in paragraph 4-7-4) or unless they are extremely common, eg: MLG (Main Landing Gear). - A given ATA Reference may cover more than one FIN, in which case the title shall be limited to the parts of the functional designation which are common to all the FINs. It is agreed to and signed by all the Breakdown coordinators, and thus represents the official reference for the development and updating of drawings 00X007 10000. The BAABI is under the general responsibility of Aerospatiale Matra Design Office. It contains: - ATA refs, limited to XX-00-00 XX-X0-00 XX-XX-00 - The title in English and French. - The FIN, limited to the circuit identification (two letters or four figures and two letters). eg: HH - 5000 HH - For each ATA REF fields are provided for movement codes, remarks, provisional code, standard, effectivity and levels of responsibility. The BAABI is a computer output, extracted from the DB ATA REF. Drawing 00X007 10000 "Drawing/Data Numbering is the official drawing form of the BAABI allowing its use for Design data. Envelope ATA 100 Breakdown (The envelope ATA 100 Breakdown (6 digit) is extracted per Aircraft Project or Family). - Is a computer listing which contains all the same information contained in the DB ATA REF down to th th 5 and 6 digit level. Note: For TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS responsibility refer to the TPWD (Technical Publications Worksharing Document), also extracted from the DB ATA REF. Due to the importance of the consequences, a reply shall be given as follows: - within 20 working days for 4 digit ATA References. - within 10 working days for 5/6 digit ATA References, (attention should be paid to holidays/ vacation periods). The originator may consider the request for amendment as accepted only when acknowledged by the Aerospatiale Matra organization responsible for the DB ATA REF. Each coordinator has to arrange internal coordination and to record by using the pre-printed Request for Amendment form.

This applies at two levels: (1) The same name shall be allocated to the same type of part, and this: - whatever the aircraft project, - whatever the aircraft section, - whatever the AIB Member/Associated Partner/Subcontractor. (2) The same name shall be used for the same PN in all applications: - drawings and/or associated documents (whatever the type: detail, assembly, and whatever the sheets: picture, schedule), - technical publications (CMMM, IPC, SRM, etc.).

Sources for Naming To achieve the required level of consistency, a catalog of standard names is provided in the separate Appendix to this ABD: - Appendix B - Drawn Parts. If it is necessary to quote names of systems/sub-systems/sub-sub-systems, refer to drawing 00X00710000 (X representing the letter specific to the aircraft involved) or to the equivalent Basic Approved ATA 100 Breakdown Index (BAABI). Numbering/Naming In the case of castings and forgings, it is the name describing the part which shall be used, (not the word "CASTING", "FORGING", (eg: STRUT - MLG DRAG)). Part names are limited to 21 characters. They must therefore: - be brief, - be sufficiently general to allow further end usage without needing to be changed but contain sufficient information to categorize the part. The main identifying noun or noun phrase shall be placed first, to facilitate the automated selection of parts. eg: SUPPORT It shall be followed, if required, by a dash and then the most significant modifier or modifying phrase, which will further describe the part so as to distinguish it from other parts of a similar name. eg: SUPPORT - TUBULAR Articles, prepositions and conjunctions such as "AN", "THE", "OF", "FOR" shall not appear in the part name. Rules for Naming - Functional Designations
6-4-1
General The following rules apply to all items with a FIN, eg: - Equipment (whether Off-the-Shelf or new Airbus specific). - Components or Sub-components of equipment considered as being themselves Line Replaceable Units (LRU). - Functionally Significant Standard Items. A Functional Designation shall indicate what the item involved is, and what it does on the aircraft and in the system/circuit involved. It shall also include, where relevant, any related system, unit or location data. As a general rule, each FIN has a single Functional Designation which does not change, whatever the source of supply (PN) of the item involved. In general, Functional Designations are allocated at the same time as the FINs, on the Functional Diagrams (FD) and Principle Diagrams (PD) and are then loaded in the Equipment Central Data Bank (ECDB). They are structured in agreement with the basic rules set out in paragraph 6-4-3. Later, they are used in other applications such as: - labels, - markings, - display unit messages, - ATA 100 Breakdown (Refer to Chap. 4), - Contractual Technical Publications. Depending on the application, they can be used: - as defined in paragraph 6-4-3, - in whole or in part (eg: labels), - with or without abbreviations, - with or without the Main Word first (eg: Display Unit Messages). eg: The ATA 100 Breakdown uses Functional Designations at 6 digit level: - with the Main Word first, - but often in part only (several FINs for one ATA Reference), - and very limited abbreviations. Display Unit Messages also use Functional Designations: - with abbreviations, - but often only the Main Word, - and always in the normal order of words (not "Main Word first" layout). (Ref. paragraph 6-6). But, whatever the form used in the above applications: - the basic Functional Designations allocated on Functional Diagrams and Principle Diagrams and loaded in ECDB shall always follow ABD0004 and ABD0036 (Paragraph 6-4-3) (i.e. Main Word first, etc.), - the wording shall be identical.

Form and Content of the Functional Designation Functional Designations consist of: - a Main Word or Words (20 characters max.), - a Principal Modifier, - a Complementary Modifier, where applicable, the total not to exceed 54 characters. st
The Main Word shall be separated from any Modifier by a dash (21 digit max, no spaces either side of the dash). Modifiers shall be separated from each other by a comma. eg: RELAY-LOW LEVEL DET, Y HYD RSVR - The Main Word(s) shall be a basic description of the item (ie: the minimum information needed to categorize the item, eg: Relay, Pump…). Ideally, the Standardized Technological Description (Refer to 6-7-1) should be used. It shall form at least part of the Standardized Technological Description (indicated on the Equipment/Component Specification) which is stored in a specific field in the ECDB, (Refer to 6-5). eg: Standardized Technological Main word of Functional Description Designation • RELAY • RELAY • PUMP-HYDRAULIC • PUMP • ACTUATOR-LINEAR • ACTUATOR • VALVE-CHECK, 1/2 IN • CHECK VALVE • TRANSDUCER-PRESSURE • PRESS XDCR In the case of equipment commonly referred to by their abbreviation the whole abbreviation shall be considered as the Main Word. If a suffix is required it shall be considered as a complementary modifier. Correct use of the Main Word(s) ensures consistency between eg: Functional/Principle Diagrams, Messages on Display Units, Placards, Labels, Markings and Technical Publications. For this reason, it is essential that the form and content shall remain constant in all applications. In addition, the Main Words of Functional Designations for items common to more than one Airbus Program/Project shall not change from one Program/Project to another, because of the repercussions on the Standardized Technological Descriptions and therefore on the documents that use them. To facilitate selection of Main Words, and to ensure consistency of content and form throughout all applications where Main Words are used, a catalog of the Standard Main Words to be used is included in the separate Appendix to this ABD: - Refer to Appendix F - Non Standard Items - Standard Main Words for Functional Designations. If any additions/amendments to the catalog should prove necessary, the catalog shall be completed using the procedure indicated in the Foreword to the Appendix on page FW-1.
- The Principal Modifier shall reflect the function carried out by the item of equipment, in the particular aircraft, and System/Circuit involved. In some instances, it may include identifying information. eg: RELAY-LOW LEVEL IND, Y HYD RSVR PRESS SW-FUEL PUMP 1, L WING TANK Numerical suffixes must, if space permits, be separated from the term by a space. In the case of Panel-mounted items, eg: Pushbutton Switches, Annunciators, Circuit Breakers etc., there shall be consistency both as regards content and form between the Principal Modifier and the Labels on the Panels. Rules for Naming - Standardized Technological Description

General The Standardized Technological Description identifies the nature and category of an item in general terms, eg: Proximity Sensor. Being independent of a specific function it allows the item to be used in several applications across several projects or programs. It shall be consistent with the title of the Technical Specification for the item and with the basic part of the Functional Designation.

Responsibility The reference document for Technical Specification title definition is the Functional Diagram/Principle Diagram. The responsibility for detail functional design is allocated to the NSDW Level 2. Any conflicts shall be settled with the Level 1 organization. The necessary coordination shall be ensured via the System Interface activities.

Form and Content of the Description - General The Standardized Technological Description shall reflect, as regards content but not necessarily form (the order of words may be different), the Main Word of the Functional Designation. This may be completed with any other technological information considered absolutely essential. However, the name shall be sufficiently general to allow for any future use in applications not originally envisaged. Numbering/Naming However, in some cases (eg: for computers), where the design of the equipment is so specific to a given function as to preclude any possibility of it being used for another function, mention of the system/function is accepted eg: • Fuel Quantity Indication Computer (FQIC). • Air Data Inertial Reference Unit (ADIRU).
- Form of the Description The Standardized Technological Description consists of: • a main identifying noun, • complementary information relative to the operating mode/application of the item, • if necessary, application information. The total not to exceed 21 characters including spaces and/or special characters such as dash/ comma. The main identifying noun shall be separated from the complementary information by a dash (-). Any additional information shall be separated from the rest by a comma (,). eg: • Pump • Pump-Hydraulic • Valve-Fuel • Valve-Fuel, Remote Ctl • Valve-Pressure Holding In some instances some common items may be adopted for specific functions. In such a case this specific functional aspect may be included in the description. eg: • Valve-Air, Skin • Bearing-Steady, Kink As in the case of Functional Designations for Non Standard Items (eg: computers) usually identified by their abbreviations, the abbreviation shall be considered as the full description (i.e.: identifying noun plus complementary information). eg: • Fuel Quantity Indication Computer (FQIC) Note: Every effort shall be made by systems specialists to restrict use of this type of abbreviation to major/complex equipment. Use of too many abbreviations of this kind does not enhance comprehension by airline mechanics and CMM users.
- Description Consistency Every effort must be made to ensure consistency in the Standardized Technological Descriptions use in Airbus documents: • both within the same project, whatever the supplier and whoever the Member, • and from one Airbus project to another.

Status Reports The messages which are shown on display units are split into three blocks. - ATA Reference or: • function concerned (Circuit/Installation), • or the item involved. - FIN of the item(s) involved. - TEXT: • either the Functional Designation of the function concerned, • or a statement in the normal order of words incorporating the Main Word(s) of the Functional Designation of the equipment involved. This does not affect the rules for compiling Functional Designations.
If the statement in the normal order of words is used, it shall be compiled by the NSDW Level 2 for the display unit software in conjunction with the System Specialist concerned. The statement shall be so written that the Flight Crews will be able to easily understand the message. This is of obvious importance in cases of emergency.

In this case the name used shall: • reflect that indicated on the relevant standard, • be limited to the minimum amount of information required to categorize the item (the "Main Word" plus other information considered necessary). Modification Proposals and Modifications

General The definition of the design of an aircraft and any changes to the design are managed by a system of Modification Proposals (MP) which, when accepted for implementation, become Modifications (MOD). An MP is associated with a MOD by a Change Identification Number (CIN). To ensure that modification data can be stored in EDP systems, so facilitating its easy retrieval in order to define an aircraft configuration, it is essential that MPs and MODs shall be correctly numbered and titled.

Numbering The method of numbering of MPs and MODs is defined at the start of an Aircraft Project/Program by the appropriate General Modification Committee (GMC). Refer to Aircraft Configuration Management Rules (ACMR) which is an updated version of the earlier Airbus Industrie Modifications Handbook (AIMH).

Naming
12-3-1
General In naming, the term "Subject" applies only to MPs. The term "Title" is applied only to MODs/CINs/ Service Bulletins. It is important that names are correct and consistent as they are used for data extraction and enquiry purposes. Both MPs and MOD's require names and the rules for establishing names are common to both. As soon as a modification is certificated its title and the subjects of the associated MPs names should not be revised/amended. Consequently, they have to be correctly formulated at an early stage of definition. Titles for CINs depend on application (see 12-3-3-2) but generally follow the subject of the MP. The length of titles shall not exceed 3 lines of 39 characters (117 characters including spaces). Abbreviations shall be kept to a minimum and without exception shall comply with ABD0037 - Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook.

General MP subjects and MOD titles shall be written in accordance with the ATA Specification 100 rules for Service Bulletin titles. This avoids having to change subjects/titles for Service Bulletins. According to ATA Specification 100, the MP title shall generally consist of three categories of information: - Designation of the major affected ATA Specification 100 Chapter. - Designation of the major item affected. - Description of the modification objective. Detail considerations are explained in the following text.

General A CIN comprises a Modification Number and the associated MP number and these are inseparable. The Modification Number may precede the MP number or vice versa. Each CIN shall be allocated a significant title which reflects the purpose of the MP(s)/MOD(s). CIN titles are used in Technical Publications (for highlights in Manuals, Service Bulletin titles, etc.), so it is extremely important that both MP and MOD titles are significant and correct. Several cases of association between MP and MOD may occur.

1 . Aircraft Functions Aircraft Functions are identified by ATA 100 References: - Ref: * ABD0036, Chapter 4, for Numbering and Naming rules. ATA 100 References. are given at these levels: XX-00-00 (System) XX-X0-00 (Sub-system) XX-XX-00 (Sub-sub-system: Installation/Circuit) These levels are recorded for each Aircraft/Program/Project in the applicable Basic Approved ATA Breakdown Index (BAABI) and can be consulted on line on the Airbus network, in the DB ATA REF (entry by ATA Ref.). Contact for further information: Aerospatiale Matra Airbus (Reference AM 2002, TF7, for names of contacts).
2 . Units Units are allocated a 6 digit Reference: XX-XX-11 and (Units) XX-XX-99 This Reference corresponds to Maintenance Significant Items, (MSI). Their titles for ATA Reference purposes can be consulted on line in the DB ATA REF, or on hard copy in the applicable Envelope ATA 100 Breakdown. F - NON STANDARD ITEMS - STANDARD MAIN WORDS FOR FUNCTIONAL DESIGNATIONS This list provides: 1 - A basic list of Main Words for use in Component Functional Designations. 2 - A standard presentation of these Main Words, for use in all AIRBUS Projects, whatever the industrial worksharing and/or transfers of responsibility, to obtain maximum consistency in wording content and layout between: - all labels: • in the cockpit • stuck on the structure next to the equipment - interior markings - exterior markings - messages on display units - any lists of components using the FIN and functional designation eg: • Nomenclature of Principle Diagrams and Functional Diagrams • Aircraft Wiring List • Aircraft Maintenance Manual component location information
Consideration of above has led to widespread use of abbreviations, selected on the following basis and order of priority: 1 - Abbreviations used in the cockpit. 2 - Abbreviations commonly used (eg: in System Description Notes - SDN, Technical Publications). 3 - Abbreviations which are considered to be useful and understandable, and therefore suitable for use on placards, display units, etc. 4 - Abbreviations necessary to limit the main word to 20 characters. Any Main Words not in the above three categories are left in full. The abbreviations used are all approved in ABD0037 Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH). This list also includes Main Words used in the Airbus ATA 100 Breakdowns at 6 digit level for Assemblies or Structural Items. These do not have FINs but their designations are constructed in the same manner as those for items with FINs. If necessary, the main words listed can be used with the word "Assy" (assembly). They can also be used in the plural. Consequently, main words including the word "assy" are not included in the list, unless they cannot be used without "assy". The list does not include names of major assemblies, such as "aileron", "slat" or "spoiler", as these are listed in Appendix D - Constituent Assemblies. .
