FLAT GLASS GAUGE (ARMORED) SIGMA’s Flat Glass Level Gauges are reliable means for accurate measurement and direct observation of process fluids. These are designed to match industry requirements of ruggedness and material mix to widen the scope of application in process tank, pressure vessels and other containers with fluids varying from ordinary water to highly corrosive chemicals. THE SYSTEM: The Flat Gauges are inevitable means for process fluid measurement when it comes to severity of conditions. The medium to be measured is made available for direct measurement outside the vessel without any special preparations and provides on line monitoring. The principle of liquid maintaining the same level makes this system very precise and reliable. The fluid attains its level in the chamber of the level gauge as that of the vessel and is viewed through a glass window. SIGMA Gauge Valves form a major component of the flat glass gauges. Two gauge valves at the ends of the gauge chamber are connected to the tank. Under normal operations, the valves are kept wide open causing the pressure to equalize in the system thus permitting the liquid to seek its true level for observation along the visible length. SIGMA offers Reflex and Transparent type Flat Level Gauges as required by the industry. Sigma Advant-edge Maintenance free rugged design. Material mix to suit specific application. WELD PAD FLAT GLASS LEVEL GAUGE WELD PAD Flat Glass Liquid Level Gages are designed to become an integral part of the vessel, Weld pad liquid Level Gages are directly mounted to the tank or vessel to be measured. SIGMA Welding Pad Gages are used where conventional gage and valve construction is impractical because of solid matter in suspension, under conditions where the thermal error caused by piping to a gage glass cannot be tolerated or where space requirements suggest their use. Included are applications involving high vibration, highly viscous liquids or liquids with considerable amounts of solids. SIGMA offers end users a flat or radius weld pad gage in varying lengths and configurations. It is possible to monitor color, clarity and level of a gas / liquid interface. Because there are no nipples through which the process liquid enters the gage, clogging potential is eliminated. SIGMA Welding Pad Gages are made in both Reflex and Transparent Types. Reflex gages are used where liquid reading only is required. Transparent gages are usualy used where installation is made on each side of the vessel to give see-through visibility.
The System SIGMA weld pad gages comprise of six basic components. Each component may vary slightly, depending on the desired physical and mechanical properties for the gage. refer picture: 1. Chamber - provides a pressure retaining metallic surface for weld attachment to the tank or vessel. Vessel chamber surface can be radiused to match tank or vessel curvature. Slot(s) are machined into the chamber to provide direct visualization of the process fluid. 2. Gasket - seal the gap and prevent leakage between the chamber and the glass. Gaskets are available in a variety of materials for compatibility with the media in the gage. 3. Cushion - acts as a protective buffer between the glass and the cover. For proper sealing, cushions must be as hard or harder than the gasket material. 4. Cover - protects the glass assembly from external hits and provides a flat, rigid surface that is used to evenly compress the gage assembly. 5. Bolting - compresses the components between the covers & weld pad chamber. Mica Shield - (Optional on transparent gages) used to prevent the process media from contacting the glass. Load Consideration: Whenever it is necessary to slot the tank because of the nature of the liquid or there is need to observe the color or interface of the liquid, the following facts must be considered: Standard and welding pad gages will withstand a loading due to the pressure within the gage itself, but they are not designed to replace the tank strength lost with tank wall is cut. SIGMA has no control over the loading in which the pressure vessel will impose on the pad. It is therefore impossible to rate welding pad gages. The tank fabricator must provide suitable tank wall reinforcement to prevent the pad from being distorted during welding or while under hot operating condition.

Sigma Magnetic level gauge consists of : • A vertical chamber consisting of a non magnetic tube of suitable diameter and thickness • A float, where-in magnets are placed radially exactly on the liquid level line (floating point) • Two horizontal stub pipes with specified end connection • An indicator outside the vertical chamber comprising of a set of flags that contain a set of permanent magnet encapsulated, which can rotate on their horizontal axis or a magnetic follower that moves along in a transparent tube. • Optional shut off valves at the two stub pipes to isolate the level gauge • A non magnetic scale with graduations in mm/cm/inches As the float moves up and down with changing level, the following action takes place: -
In case of the flag type, the flag indicator consists of bicolored flags that are contrasting dark and bright colors. The bright represents the liquid level and the dark color depicts the empty or interface fluid level. The float immerses only on the upper fluid and floats on the lower for which the specific gravity suitability is maintained.

FLOAT LEVEL INDICATOR SIGMA tank level indicators are float operated target type suitable for liquid level gauging of fixed roof, floating roof, open type vertical storage tanks and underground sumps for water, oil, solvents etc. The tank level indicators are of simple construction and are easy to install. They are very sturdy and require no maintenance. A float operated tank indicator comprises of a float that is located within guide cables. The guide cables whose ends are fastened on to an anchor bar are kept straight and wrinkle free by tension devices. The anchor bar is either grouted or welded to the tank bases. The float cable is wound over a set of pulleys, which are secured in the pulley housing. One end of the float cable bears the float and the other end carries a pointer assembly with a counter weight for balance. FLOAT LEVEL INDICATOR WITH LEVEL SWITCH The various advantages of the float level indicator is to provide continuous liquid level measurement for bulk storage applications is further enhanced by the addition of level control. SIGMA float level indicator cum switch is specifically engineered to reduce maintenance and enhance reliability. FLI with Level Switch is the best solution in critical areas where it is not possible to use Level Switches in the inside of the tank. Typical application area includes Floating Roof Tanks, Underground Sumps where switching is not possible internally / externally. The principle of the float level indicator is to transmit movement of the float to the pointer over a set of pulleys by means of a float wire/cable. The pointer houses a magnet. A side mounting level switch is attached to the side of the board of the float level indicator. As the pointer moves closer to the magnetic field, the repelling magnet inside the switch housing actuates a set of micro-switches. Automatic Tank Level Gauge (Float & Tape Type) August Series SIGMA’s AUGUST series Automatic Tank Gauges are designed to provide continuous liquid level measurement for bulk storage applications. The AUGUST is a float actuated instrument that provides continuous and reliable liquid level measurement, specifically engineered to reduce maintenance and enhance reliability.
Auto Tank Gauge Operation In principle, the AUGUST utilizes a large stainless steel float that is attached to a perforated stainless steel tape to detect the liquid level. The float traces the liquid level rise and fall due to the constant pull-back tension force provided by a power spring. The precisely perforated tape engages pins on a sprocket drive wheel that in turn drives the measurement counter mechanism. The float is guided between the guide wires that are kept straight/kink free through the tension devices. Alternatively, still wells that shall guide the float can be used where there is no provision for guide wires. This simple, rugged design makes the gauge to perform with negligible maintenance throughout its working life.

a. Guide Wires/Tension devices/Float are NOT required for floating roof tanks. Floats are required if Floating roof with float wel l is used. In this case, Guide rods may be used based on floating well tank dimensions. Accuracy of floating roof will depend purely on roof/float well movement. In case of floating roof the tape is attached to the floating roof itself. In floating roof tank installations, it is recommended that gauges be installed in a float well, rather than attaching the tape directly to the tank roof. The float well should contain a baffle to prevent the float from escaping, but also allow sufficient product movement to equalize the liquid level. No tape should be exposed outside of the roof or pipe work. If any section of the tape is currently exposed it should be replaced with a SS flexible cable,this will reduce measurement error due to wind drift. The connector between the tape and cable should not run over a conduit elbow (or pulley). b. Accuracy for the ATLG with : 300 mm diameter float is 2 mm, with 15 mm diameter float is 20 mm c. LEVEL SWITCH (REED TYPE) SIGMA Float operated Reed Level Switch are ideally designed for liquid level indication in tanks. The design is simple and compact. Typical applications are water, diesel, chemical storage and hydraulic tanks. The level switch consists of a sealed tube inside which hermetically sealed Reed Switches are placed at points where switching operations are required. The magnetic float raises / falls with the liquid level and operates / re-operates the Reed Switch (make or break on rise / fall of liquid level specified). CONDUCTIVITY LEVEL SWITCH SIGMA's Conductivity Level Switches are simple, low cost and reliable instruments, for detection of conductive liquids. The Level Switch is available in single / multipoint level detection. A low alternating voltage is impressed between the active electrode(s) and the vessel wall / reference electrode. When the liquid comes in contact with the tip of the active electrode(s), an electrical path to ground is completed, closing the loop, resulting in flow of current. The current is transmitted to the control unit directly (in case of multiwire / integral design) or through a pre amplifier housed inside the probe head (in case of two wire design). The amplifier inside the control unit processes the signal and amplifies it to drive LED/ relay circuits. PNEUMATIC LEVEL SWITCHES SIGMA's Pneumatic Level Switches are used in application where electrical switching is not recommended or electricity is not available. The working principle is the same, except that the magnet indirectly actuates a 3/2 valve for changeover. This system requires minimum 2 kg/cm2 clean filtered air, preferably through an AFR. MAGNETIC FLOAT OPERATED LEVEL TRANSMITTER SIGMA's Magnetic Float Operated Level Transmitter is a simple and reliable technique for continuous level indication and control of any liquid, chemically compatible with the (sensor) material, unaffected by electrical conductivity, temperature, pressure or viscosity. The float is designed for variety of liquids. Operating principle The Transmitter consists of a float & guide stem assembly in nonmagnetic material to achieve undisturbed flux. A chain of closely spaced glass encapsulated reed switches & resistors are placed inside the guide tube. During rise and fall of liquid level, the magnetic float moves & actuates a reed switch in the chain. The sensed voltage is fed to the transmitter located in the enclosure for conversion to a signal of 4-20 mA.

FLOW SWITCH Sigma Flow Switch is an extension of the level switches. There are two types of flow switches : one for low flow / line size up to 50 mm line size (Model FS 1000) and another from 25 mm onwards up to 800 mm or above (Model FS 1010). Operating Principle Model FS 1000 is a valve type Flow Switch wherein an increase in flow through the body raises the valve disc depending upon the flow. This in turn raises the magnetic sleeve moving inside a non-magnetic enclosure. The movement of the sleeve attracts the magnet located outside the tube which in turn actuates a micro switch. Decrease in flow reverses the action. Model FS 1010 is a target type which moves from a vertical position to a near horizontal position as the flow increases. This change in position moves a magnetic sleeve in a non-magnetic enclosure. The movement of the magnetic sleeve attracts a magnet which in turn actuates a micro switch. Decrease in flow brings the target back to the vertical position. Application: The Flow Switches are used to sense the start or stop of non-viscuos liquid flow like water, gas, chemicals or any other flowing medium. They are used in interlock systems for ensuring minimum flow through pipe lines before starting equipments. In cooling water these flow switches are used to shut down the pumps, blowers, fans should the flow decreases below a predetermined limit.

CONDENSATE POT / SEAL POT CONDENSATE POTS are used to catch and hold condensate and foreign material. This helps keep manifold orifices clean and free of foreign material. They are located upstream of the instrument and have a bottom drain so that they may be cleaned. The condensate pots are available in a range of materials. Installation can be either vertical or horizontal lines between primary (Flow Meter) and the secondary (transmitter/ gauge) to act as a barrier to the line fluid permitting direct sensing of the flow conditions. Units should be mounted at the same level minimizing possible error that could arise due to unequal head of fluid in the connecting pressure lines. Typical industry applications include: refineries, Power Plants, Chemical and Petrochemical, Steel Plants and other process industries. SEAL POTS (sometimes called condensate pots) are used to allow a liquid seal between the instrument and flowing gases such as steam. Their function is to keep the liquid level constant in the impulse tubes. For example, in boiler liquid level applications the high pressure (HP) side of a differential pressure transmitter is connected to the vapor space on top of the steam drum. Steam condenses in the chamber or seal pot and fills the impulse line with condensate. The seal pot is located to allow the condensate to drain back to the source thus keeping the liquid level constant. NOTE: Seal and Condensate chambers are considered to have the same pressure rating as ASTM 106 Gr.B pipe of the same thickness. This pressure varies depending on the location and code being used. Unless otherwise specified, 50 bar is a minimum rating provided. Temperature rating will depend on material selected & working pressure as per pipe standards.
