OVERVIEW The five-minute head quick sketch can be likened to stretching before you go for a long run. This is the time period our students at Watts Atelier use to do their warm ups before going into a two-anda-half-hour head drawing. Emphasis will be placed on the art of vignetting, basic composition, edge mapping, and again, dexterity development. This is one of my favorites.

ASSIGNMENT: 5-MINUTE QUICK SKETCHES–FEMALE

This exercise is a staple at our atelier. We start our three-hour portrait classes with four 5-minute poses just to warm up. Emphasis will be placed on quick analyzation, calligraphy, and idealization. Part 1: Watch my video demonstrating the approach to 5-minute quick sketch. Part 2: Print out or view the images from a tablet or desktop computer. Get yourself a small timer to stay on point. Relax and set your intention. Part 3: Approach the whole page as a composition. Use my spatial breakdown for now and mimic what I do. By copying my images your hand will have to hold the tools in a similar way thus allowing you to gain quicker efficiency. Part 4: Utilize all three models to study from and execute each 5-minute pose. You can always do a few more pages of 5-minute poses using the other photo reference provided for the 10-minute, 20-minute and other exercises. Note: When approaching female heads, the use of the abstraction will be more judicious as the inherent structure is more subtle (unless of course it is an older model). Keep up the good work–you’ll have your portraits singing in no time.
