What’s System? A system is a set of components that: function and interact in some regular and theoretically predictable manner; can be isolated for the purposes of observation and study.
System = Elements + Interconnection + Function
from BI1201 Pengantar Sains Picture dan Teknologi Hayati
Basic Elements of System
Input
• Input of things as matter, energy, of information into the system
Flow
• Throughputs of matter, energy, or information within the system at certain rates
Stock
• Storage areas, within a system where energy, matter, of information can accumulate for various lengths of time before being released
Output
• Output of certain forms of matter, energy, or information that flow out the system into sink in the environment BI1201 Pengantar Sains dan Teknologi Hayati
What’s Living System? •
•
Living system is an open self-organizing living things that interact with their environment, maintained by flows of information, energy and matter. Example: –
Organism
–
Ecosystem
–
Etc.
Living System
Biosystem

Hierarchy in Biosystem Hierarchy in biosystem spans from DNA (blueprint of living system) to Biosphere.
Yet, the smallest autonomous structural, functional and biological unit of life is cell.
Characteristics of Biosystem REMEMBER!!! System = Elements + Interconnection + Function •
•
Since Biosystem is a kind of SYSTEM, then we can distinguish its characteristics by identifying its elements, interconnection and function. Let see Ecosystem as our example.

Ecosystem’s Elements Abiotic Components:
Biotic Components:
Physical and Chemical Factors
Organisms
Sunlight (the ultimate energy input )
Bacteria
Precipitation
Fungi
Temperature
Plants

Ecosystem’s Interconnection •
•
An example of interconnection in ecosystem is pointed out by the trophic cascade hypothesis. Other examples: –
Symbiotic organisms
Predator-prey relationship
–
–
Etc. BI1201 Pengantar Sains dan Teknologi Hayati
Ecosystem Characteristics: Functions •
•
•
Function or purpose is an embedded property of a system. Ecosystem functions are the biological, geochemical and physical processes and components that take place or occur within an ecosystem, sometimes’s called ecological processes. Example of ecological processes: – – – –
Predation Symbiosis Water treatment by wetland ecosystem Etc. BI1201 Pengantar Sains dan Teknologi Hayati
To see how far you understand the materials, you can check by reviewing and answering these questions.
1. What is system? 2. What is living system/biosystem? 3. Explain how we can distinguish the characteristics of biosystem! 4. Why is solar energy being called as the ultimate input for ecosystem, as well as biosystem as a whole?
Review BI1201 Pengantar Sains dan Teknologi Hayati
1.
Let’s say that we live in an ecosystem called “Bandung City”.
a.
What will happen if all decomposers in Bandung are dead?
b.
What will happen if all trees in Bandung are cut down?
Assignment BI1201 Pengantar Sains dan Teknologi Hayati
2.
Look at the diagram and explain “ why” it’s called system. Describe which are the elements, interconnection and functions within the system.
