2008 SCHEDULE Cleveland Browns (1-3) vs. New York Giants (4-0) DATE: October 13, 2008 SITE: Cleveland Browns Stadium KICKOFF: 8:30 p.m. (ET) CAPACITY: 72,300 SURFACE: Grass
THE GAME The Cleveland Browns (1-3) host the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants (4-0) in primetime on Monday, Oct. 13 at 8:30 p.m. with ESPN’s Monday Night Football from Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns look to build off a 20-12 road win at Cincinnati on Sept. 28 and recently the bye weekend, while the Giants remain undefeated coming off a 44-6 home win over the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday at Giants Stadium. This contest will mark the 47th meeting between these two traditionrich franchises. For twenty years (1950-1969) the Browns and the Giants were Eastern Conference foes, however following the NFL and AFL merger in 1970, the Browns joined the AFC’s Central Division with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Houston, while the Giants remained in the NFC East Division with Philadelphia, Washington, Dallas and St. Louis. Cleveland leads the regular season series 25-19-2 (.555), including a 13-10-0 (.565) regular season mark in Cleveland. Since the merger in 1970, the clubs have faced each other only seven times. The Browns last win over the Giants came Dec. 1, 1985 in a 35-33 road win at the Giants. Cleveland scored 17 fourth quarter points to earn its first victory of the season at Cincinnati on Sept. 28 with a 20-12 road victory. Browns QB Derek Anderson connected with WR Braylon Edwards on a four-yard touchdown toss to open a 10-6 lead, and RB Jamal Lewis added a one-yard touchdown plunge to extend the 17-6 lead. On the afternoon, Anderson was 15 of 24 passing for 138 yards with one touchdown and one interception. TE Kellen Winslow led the club with 5 receptions for 54 yards while Lewis paved the way with 25 carries for 79 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, the Browns limited the Bengals to only 69 yards rushing and 211 net yards of offense, while forcing five turnovers and three sacks.

THE COACHES
ABOUT THE Giants
CLEVELAND BROWNS - ROMEO CRENNEL Romeo Crennel is entering his fourth season as Head Coach and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension (thru 2011) on Jan. 29, 2008. Crennel led the Browns to a 10-6 record in 2007, including a franchisebest seven consecutive home wins, and witnessed six Browns selected to the Pro Bowl. Crennel’s offense developed into a highly productive unit and ranked eighth in the NFL in offense (5,621 net yards) and scoring (402 points). The output of net yards and scoring also ranked third best in franchise history. Crennel was named head coach of the Cleveland Browns on Feb. 8, 2005, the 11th full-time head coach in franchise history. Crennel returned to Cleveland in 2005, after serving as the Browns defensive coordinator in 2000, and along with Phil Savage helped rebuild the football operations. Crennel previously led the Browns to a respectable 6-10 record in his first year as a head coach and added a 4-12 mark in 2006. His resume includes 38 years of coaching experience, including 27 years in the NFL. Prior to rejoining the Browns, Crennel served as the defensive coordinator for New England (2001-04), helping the Patriots to three Super Bowl victories. From 1997-99, Crennel coached the defensive line on the New York Jets. He spent 12 years on the New York Giants coaching staff starting as the special teams and defensive assistant coach in 1981. Crennel began his professional coaching career in 1970 at his alma mater, Western Kentucky. He also saw stints at Texas Tech, Mississippi and Georgia Tech before entering the professional ranks. NEW YORK GIANTS - TOM COUGHLIN Tom Coughlin reached the pinnacle of the coaching profession in the 2007 season when he led the Giants to a victory in Super Bowl XLII. Coughlin is one of just six active coaches to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory. The championship season capped a Giants revival that began when Coughlin was named the 16th head coach in franchise history on Jan. 6, 2004. Coughlin was an assistant coach with the Giants when they won Super Bowl XXV in 1990. He entered 2008 103-89 (.536) in the regular season, plus 8-6 in the postseason for an overall record of 111-95 (.539). Coughlin previously coached the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking charge of the expansion franchise and guiding the team for its first eight seasons. Coughlin compiled a 68-60 regular season record (.531), plus a 4-4 mark in the playoffs, and twice took Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game. Coughlin was out of football in 2003 but has been in the coaching profession for almost 40 years. Coughlin arrived in Jacksonville following three years as the head coach at Boston College, where he turned a struggling program into a top 20 team. Coughlin was the Giants wide receivers coach under Bill Parcells from 1988-90. Coughlin began his coaching career in 1969 as a graduate assistant at Syracuse, his alma mater. He was the head coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1970-73, compiling a record of 1615-2. Coughlin returned to Syracuse in 1974, first serving as quarterbacks and offensive backfield coach for three seasons before being promoted to offensive coordinator for four years. Coughlin entered the NFL as the Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receivers coach in 1984 and ‘85. He held the same position with the Green Bay Packers in 1986 and ‘87 before moving to the Giants for a three-year stint.
The defending Super Bowl Champions enter Monday night’s contest with a perfect 4-0 record. The Giants have defeated Washington (16-7), St. Louis (41-13), Cincinnati (26-23, OT) and Seattle (44-6). QB Eli Manning has totaled 1,032 yards through the air with six TD passes. RB Brandon Jacobs leads the ground attack with 380 yards and 3 TDs. Zastudil sets franchise record With winds gusting between 40-50 miles per hour on Sunday Sept. 14, against Pittsburgh, the conditions were perfect for a difficult task for kickers on the special teams units. However, Browns P Dave Zastudil established a careerbest 53.0 gross average and 52.8 net average on his five punts for 265 yards. Zastudil’s net average also established a team single-game mark (dating back to 1970) and ranks tied for second-highest net punting single-game average in the NFL. More impressively, Zastudil set the tone early in the contest as four of his five punts came in the first quarter kicking into the gusty winds and his fifth kick came in the third stanza into the wind as well.
Dawson reaches milestone With his four points against the Ravens on Sept. 21, K Phil Dawson topped the 800 point milestone and totaled 803 career points. Dawson has registered a point in each of the last 25 games. The last time Dawson failed to record a point was against Cincinnati on Nov. 26, 2006. On Sept. 28 at Cincinnati, he added two field goals and two extra points and moved his career total to 811 points.

THROWBACKS THIS MONDAY NIGHT
Browns Name 2008 Captains
The Cleveland Browns will wear the uniforms from the 1957-59 seasons when they battle the Giants this Monday. The uniform features the following changes:
Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel named LB Willie McGinest, LB Andra Davis, QB Derek Anderson, C Hank Fraley, K Phil Dawson and KR Joshua Cribbs as team captains for the 2008 season. The players were voted upon by their teammates.
-Three-inch brown player numbers on both sides of the helmet (used from 195760).
McGinest (15th season) and Davis (7th season) will serve as defensive captains, Anderson (4th season) and Fraley (9th season) will serve as offensive captains, while Dawson (10th season) and Cribbs (4th season) as special teams captains.
-Includes the removal of the current two brown stripes running on either side of the white stripe down the middle of the helmet. The single white stripe was used in that manner from 1952, when the Browns went from all-white helmets minus any striping, to orange helmets until 1960, when the two brown stripes were added.
Each NFL club will have team captains wear a captain patch on their uniform. The idea came from NFL players during a meeting of Commissioner Roger Goodell’s new Player Advisory Council last season. The purpose of the program is to support and recognize the importance of team leadership through the role of the captains. Captains traditionally serve as a link between players, coaches and management to help foster cohesion within the teams.
-The return of a thinner brown stripe, surrounded by the two orange stripes, running the length of the side of the white pants. -There will be no numbers on the shoulder of the brown jerseys. -Instead of solid brown socks, the Browns will go back to the brown-white-orange-white-orange-white-brown color striping.

Edwards set a franchise record for receiving TDs in a season (Gary Collins, 1963) with his 14th and 15th TD grabs of the season in the Browns Week 16 contest with the Bengals, before finishing the season with one final TD grab in the victory over the 49ers in Week 17, increasing his franchise record to 16. Edwards also matched his career-high with eight receptions in the Week 16 game with the Bengals, the fourth time he hauled in eight passes in a game in 2007.
Browns WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow became the first duo in Browns history to each record 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. “The opposing defense has to pick their poison, double either myself or Braylon,” said Winslow. “Braylon is good to have as a catalyst on this offense because he is getting open and beating his man. Opposing defenses have to account for both of us on the field and then it creates opportunities for other players.” Edwards became the sixth receiver in Browns history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a single season, setting the franchise record for most receiving yards in a single season. Winslow joined Edwards as the seventh Browns receiver to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season. Romeo Crennel Press Conference Transcript 10-6-08 ((Opening statement)- “After a weekend away from football a little bit, we’re back and getting ready for the Giant game on Monday night. Most of the guys should be rested, we’ve got a big challenge to try to figure out how to slow these guys down because they are playing pretty good. I think our guys will be excited about it, a home game. Our guys try hard at home and put forth a good effort so it will be interesting and we are looking forward to it. I think the last game we played, being able to get a win was a step in the right direction for us and hopefully we’ll be able to build on that and continue to move in that path.”
back to throw it, sometimes you’ll see double moves. He’s got some good targets that he’s throwing to and they have been productive.” (On thwarting Eli Manning)- “If you can try to disrupt his timing, disrupt the receiver or disrupt the quarterback by getting in his face. Generally if you get somebody in the quarterback’s face, you have got a chance.” (On the corners disrupting wide receivers)- “I have said all along that those guys are competitive. They go out and compete down-in and down-out, they’re still learning and growing but I like what I see from them.”
(On injuries)- “I think we will be closer to having a full compliment of players because we will be able to get more guys back on the practice field during the bye week. Willie McGinest and Donte’ Stallworth were able to practice. Having those guys back should help us and we will see where it takes us. With the rest of the guys, as far as injuries go, Sean Jones may be able to begin to do a little bit, we will see what he can do. He is not supposed to be back until next week so if he can do something, that might be a big help for us. During the course of the bye week, we rested Shaun Rogers and Kevin Shaffer with his concussion. He’ll be checked out again today to find out where he is and what he might be able to get done this week. Shaun Smith, with his hand, we have been trying to put a cast on it so that will enable him to be able to participate and play. We rested (Kellen) Winslow during the bye week and I think the rest will help him as we go into this game this week. I anticipate the attitude is going to be good and that guys will want to make a step in the correct direction because I think they felt, after the last game, that the team contributed. All phases had something to do with it and they felt good about that. We are going to try to build on that and be better as we go into the last three-quarters of the season.”
(On the best position for Ryan Tucker)- “I think that depends on how it works out and what he can do. I thought he helped us at both spots last year. Primarily when he came back, he came in at guard and did a very nice job there. Prior to that he had done a nice job at tackle. We know he is capable of playing both positions. Probably if Shaffer can’t go then having Ryan will be a big plus for us, whether it’s tackle or guard, I think he will do a good job.” (On Rex Hadnot)- “Hadnot is playing pretty decent. He is a physical, aggressive guy in there, he is able to hold his own, he is one of our power guys that we know can get some movement at the line of scrimmage. So he is doing a good job.” (On Tom Coughlin)- “I have a good relationship with Tom. I knew that he was a good coach as an assistant. He was punctual, organized, he liked things done a particular way and he was kind of set in his ways a little bit. That has shown up as a head coach also. I think the thing that works with players is if you give them a plan that they think they can win with. If you can help them win, whatever method you use, they will deal with it if you’re winning. If you’re losing, then it’s a different story. Tom has seen some of both, winning and losing. Right now he has got them going where he needs them and they are doing a very good job for him.”
(On the New York Giants)- “One, they are undefeated and two, they do everything well. They execute on offense, the defense is a good defense, they are able to get sacks on the quarterback, pressure their offense and be able to make plays that way. They are a solid special teams group, all the way around they are a pretty good football team and they are playing good.”
(On the team’s health)- “After you play games guys get banged up so they have got some bumps, bruises and aches that they have to deal with whereas at the beginning of training camp when all of these guys were here, they we all pretty healthy. That might have been the healthiest (that we have been this season). As you play guys get banged up a little bit, this is a tough sport. Even though we have more of a compliment, we are still dealing with things with particular guys.”
(On why some teams seem rusty after a bye week)- “I’m not exactly sure. I think it might depend on how much time the players have off during the bye. Some guys give them a week, some guys give them two days, so it might depend on how much time a team has off. Knowing Tom (Coughlin), he is not a guy to give a week off. Maybe they worked pretty hard during the bye. I gave (our team) a long weekend and I think some of that has to do with the injury situation. It wouldn’t do us any good to continue to beat them up. We worked good on Wednesday and Thursday, and they had Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. Only time will tell what impact that will have when we play the game.”
(On what the team worked on during the bye week)- “Like I’ve mentioned to you before, I put a big emphasis on penalties, I talked to the guys hard about penalties. I gave them some stats and showed them some things on how it impacts us and that we need to do a better job with it. I talked to them about turnovers as well, those are the things that I know can make us better as we improve in those areas. Offensively and defensively we looked at some areas that we can do a lot better in so they talked to the players about that. In practice we just worked on trying to get better ourselves from a competitive nature and also looking at some other things that we need to do to make us better.”
(On the preseason game versus the Giants)- “I think they beat us pretty good in that one, particularly in that stretch where we made several mistakes. Looking at it, I think they were up 14-3 with maybe two minutes to go in the first quarter. Then the next time the film clicks over, it’s 30-3. They had a stretch there where they made some plays but we screwed it up too. We helped them quite a bit. If we play better and don’t make some of the mistakes we made, then it’s a more competitive football game. I think what we have to do is we have to look at that game and learn from that game and not do some of the dumb things we did in that game to give them that surge of points in a short amount of time.”
(On having an extra week to prepare for New York)- “Like I’ve said, they are a very good football team. If we can just slow them down a little bit, that would be a plus for us. If during the bye week we can play better going into this game, I think if we play better than the first time we played them, we made some mistakes and poor choices. If we don’t make those mistakes and play better, we are in the football game. Plus, we have them here at home which is different. We went down to their place in the preseason. Now, they have to come to our place and our guys enjoy playing at home. They like the home field advantage, the crowd will be fired up, they will be behind us so we’re going to try to ride that enthusiasm.”
(On what went wrong versus the Giants)- “I attribute it to poor choices and poor execution. When you get a 15-yard personal foul penalty after the play, that’s a poor choice on our part. Execution-wise, we were on the two-yard line going in to score and we fumbled the ball and they pick it up a run it in for the touchdown. Getting a punt blocked, that is execution, letting them return for a touchdown, that is execution. Choices and execution, we have to improve on those.”
(On taunting penalties)- “I do not fine them for taunting, I talk to them about taunting. I think a player with me grows and develops and you don’t see as much of it. For instance, Kellen Winslow used to get some penalties early on. He doesn’t get penalties any more. Generally, knock on wood, my guys don’t get taunting penalties and stuff like that. I don’t fine them about taunting unless it becomes outrageous. Unless a guy decides that you don’t know what you’re talking about and I’m going to keep taunting and it’s going to keep hurting the team, then we can fine them because we can get them for double the fine or conduct detrimental. These guys do listen, sometimes and they understand it’s important not to hurt the team.”
(On the Giants road win streak)- “I don’t know about magic. I think when you play good and you do the things you have to do to win, I think you build confidence and you kind of get on a role. I think that happened to the Giants going back to last year. I don’t think they had anything sewed up before they went on that role and they got on that role and their confidence grew and they played better down the stretch as well. I think it’s a combination of both.” (On Ryan Tucker)- “He had another good week of practice during the bye week. I expect that he will be in the mix, we will see what we need to do with him.”
(On the schedule)- “There’s no relief on anyone’s schedule really. When you look at last year’s schedule, that was a tough schedule. When you look at this year’s schedule, they said the beginning was going to be tough but when they talked about schedule, they talked about the whole schedule because of who we have to play with our division, the NFC East and AFC South and the majority of those two divisions were playoff teams last year. We knew it was going to be tough going in so what we tried to do was not focus on how tough the schedule was going to be, just focus on this is the schedule and we were going to have to play it. Let’s try to get ourselves ready to go so that we’re ready to play.”
(On Eli Manning)- “One of the things he does it get rid of the ball quickly. They do a good job of protecting him because he doesn’t take the sacks. They protect him very well. Some of that has to do with his quick release and getting rid of the ball. The other has to do with their protection and they protect him well with the choices. They’re not calling seven-step drops where he has to hold the ball, they are calling plays where he gets the ball out. He does a good job of reading the pressures so he and the receiver are on the same page. When he does go down the field, generally it’s on play-action fake where they have max protection and they’ll throw it down and take a shot. When he does drop
