Vocabulary Fortunately, the current GRE format does not require a vast knowledge of obscure words anymore. My preparation list consisted of words from just @ Barron's 800 High-Frequency GRE Word List and @The Ubiquitous 400 . Learn words in context. Just words and their meaning will quickly slip out of your mind. I used Vocabulary.com used Vocabulary.com to learn the new words. It is is an awesome site with well written, somet sometimes imes funny definitions and many exa mples from real w orld usage.

Flash cards is the usual suggested method for learning words, but I found it not suited to my learning style. Instead, I created a text file with all the words I wanted to learn. Then I went thoug h the words in multiple pa sse sses, s, each time marking words I did not know (by putting a space in front of them and sorting the list at the end, so I get all unknown words at the top). So in pass 1, I would get all words I did not know or was not sure of the answer. I

and practised until I
Pass 2 then focused on which of the words I remembered from pass 1 (again by putting in additional spaces in from of words, and sorting at the end). Repeated until I got all the words. Every 2 hours or so, I revised the pass >= 2 words ag ain.
Practice It is more important to practice the GRE vocabulary question types than just mugging up words. These questions check your reading skills as well as logical thinking capability. Practice as much as you can. Don't get dejected if you keep getting wrong answers initially. Wrong answers will mainly be for two reasons: unknown words and improper logical thinking: not reading/understanding the questions, etc For unknown words: Keep noting down the new words you encounter and revise every half an hour or so For improper logic: Note carefully where you went wrong in your thinking. This is super important, and will help you avoid the same mistake in future questions. I kept a counter for each type of mistake like: didn't know the words, didn't read question properly, did not reason it out to the end, did not analyse all the options, etc. It helped me keep track of what kind of mistakes I was making, and avoid the irritating silly mistakes next time.
Quantitative Reasoning As mentioned in a lot of places. the syllabus of this section is very easy for an Indian student. Yet, I kept on making small silly mistakes: wrong calculations, not thinking it though, etc. Thus, diligent practice is required here too. I used just the official ETS resources and practice tests for this section. Kept track of all the mistakes I was making (wrong calculation, did not think of all the possibilities, took a lazy/wrong shortcut, did not read question properly etc), and tried to avoid them in the future questions. Go through the Math review section. Data analysis section usually needs a revision, esp. percentiles and quartiles. You'll find many tips in the official explanations. Eg , C omparison section may not need full calculations to find the answer.
Analytical Writing Did not practise this section at all. The night before the exam, I just went through the official book examples and tips. Also, looked up examples for both the sections online. I will of course suggest that you practice 2-3 questions of each section (with 30 minutes time limit) to form an idea of the structure and flow of your approach to these questions. General Tips Don't hurry through th e exercises. It is better to do 50 questions/words properly and remember all of them later, than to learn 100 and remember them in bits and pieces. Then pick up speed as you get closer to the test date. In the actual GRE test, I was a ble to complete the verbal sections with enough time left to go through all the questions again, and made a couple of corrections where I had misunderstood the question. Similarly for the math section, I could revise most of the sections.
One month of diligent practice should be enough to ace the GRE. All the best! Written Oct 1 • View Upvotes Upvote 49

to in which section are you lagging behind. 2) After you have analysed the area you lag the most in, you need to pick a date as early as possible, even before you have begun preparing for the examination, this might not be the best thing to do, but yes it d oes play a good motivational role in structuring your preparation for the examination, humans generally tend to work more effectively when there's a clear deadline. 3) Now about preparation, well for most of my preparation I was lagging mostly in the vocabulary section and here is wha t I did to remedy this, pick this book up from the very start and study it carefully, this book can not only help you ace any English intensive examination but can also bring about a radical change in your life
and I owe it to this book for most of my vocabulary preparations, I find this book to better than most of the novels I have read in the recent past and have given it a read more than twice from the day it picked it. Compared to other books on vocabulary enrichment this will not only teach you more words but shap e your thought process and will help you reinforce your contextual thinking which is mainly what's required in an examination like GRE. Because it's not the mortal dictionaries that evaluators are looking for in an examination that tests your academic and analytical skills which are much more suited in a graduate school. 4) More about vocabulary enrichment, now comes in the reading comprehension part of the examination which also the meat of the examination, well to be successful in a task such as this, you got to develop some reading habits, lemme tell you that I didn't read much prior to this examination but yes I always wanted to, but neglecting everyone's advice I picked up some good resources from the web, here is an accompanying link Editorials, Columns, Op-Ed, Letters, Opinionator and More Opinion and an image to go with it -

This news website is the world's leading news website, it has people who write opinions on topics ranging from politics, education, philosophy, economics, and any other topic you might conceive of, if you can read some select few articles from this link and that too regularly and understand every tid bit of it, I think you will be in a much better shape to attempt the verbal section and moreover this will also help you shape your answer for the analytical writing section as well because majorly analytical writing tasks are asked either from politics, economics and others and to complete such a task successfully you got to

know some statistics and this link will serve you well in attempting such kinds of questions. You c an refer to other lead ing news websites as well, for the ones referred by me here are they a) BBC - Homepage b) Latest US news, world news, sport and comment from the Guardian c) India's first Spiritual N etworking Website 5) Now coming to Quant, I didn't really purchase any book for preparing Quants, but yes I joined a facebook group to prepare for it, lemme post the link to the group here Facebook Its has possibly over 14000 members and there is a deluge of mathema tics questions, if you can solve them in your free time and discuss out the solutions while commenting, I think that will strengthen your basics anyway, I did mess up my quants a bit in GR E g ot 166/170, but then I had less time owing to th e fact that I was working full time and this is what I could manage. 6) One very important point to note is that media plays a big role in your learning, try to watch some good Hollywood movies, series that make extensive use of english that will not only improve your writing but your speaking as well and try to use the words you learn in your routine life, This is what I d id while my preparation, I th ink it a llowed me to get a hang of the words I read. If you can follow the above steps rather taking a conventional approach to learning, I think you will do good in the examination and thereafter. Written Jul 22, 2013 • View Upvotes

I am not sure if I can tell you the best way, but I can explain how I prepared for GRE which landed me a score of 317/340. 1. Get acquainted with the test format: People will tell you to buy the official GRE book, but all essential information is available on the internet for free. You need to know the various sections of the test, their time, the type of questions in each section and the breaks that you a re allowed to take during the exa m. 2. Judge yourself: Before starting the preparation just give one complete practice test. Numerous tests are available on the net for free. This will help you to understand the test and you will get to know about your weak and strong areas. For example during my mock test I was able to do well but my weakness was time management. I was running of time, so I knew I had to work on my speed. 3. Learning the English words: Lets come the main part now. To tell you the truth I mugged up the wordlist, it worked for me. I tried many other methods like reading newspapers, novels and all but I am too lazy to do that daily so I decided to just give my memory a try and it clicked. I strictly followed the Magoosh wordlist which contains nearly a 1000 words and Kaplan's 800 high frequency words. All in all I memorized some 1500 words and that's where my brain g ave up. I used to dedicate 2 hours da ily to learning words and used to begin with revision of words from previous day. It took me 1.5 months to prepare my vocab section. The book I used for practicing this section was Princeton Review's "1014 practice questions". It's a great book with a level higher than the main exam and prepare's you completely for the task. Any new word that I encountered during the practice sections I used to write them separately and learn them, which added some 200 more words to my vocab. One site that helped me a lot was Fun and easy way to build your vocabulary! It provides great mnemonics to learn words. 4. Quant Section: I did not put much effort in this section as I am from an engineering background and I a m quite fimiliar with basics, th ough I wou ld sug gest to n ot repeat my mistake of being over-confident. Quant requires a lot of practice and I followed Princeton Review's material for this section as well. 5. AWA: I just read some argument and essay answers just 2 days before the exam and the essential information to be included in the answer to think in that exact direction. Because of time constraints I was not able to prepare for this section well enough. 6. Practice: Give as many practice tests as possible. Believe me it is the most important thing to avoid any last minute surprises in the real test setting. There are plenty of full length tests on web that you can try. I am posting google drive link where you will find all the study material that exist for GRE preparation. Please don't be overwhelmed by the amount of material, just be selective. You don't need to do everything. Page on google.com

I think the right time is now. For GRE , 2-3 months of preparation is enough whereas for TOEFL 1-1.5 months preparation would be sufficient. You can prepare for GRE and TOEFL simultaneously, it depends on your capacity. You can book the TOEFL date lagging GRE by a week or so. If you secure a good score, then to start application process you ca n build your SOP a nd LORs, even your financial a id. W ith this you can apply for either the Sept (fall) 2015 batch or Jan (spring) 2016 batch. Written Feb 8, 2015 Upvote

Your scores in the Gradu ate R ecord Exa minations (GRE) is one of the ch ief gau ges for getting admittance in graduate and business schools in English speaking countries. Here are key tips that you must consider while preparing for the GRE exam. Ø Plan your schedule: It is important for you to prepare your schedule and the way in which you go about p reparation. Various training institutes provide software pa ckages and tools that provide awareness on the test-taking strategies, simulated tests on all areas and much needed insight on the parameters governing the way a GRE test is scored. In addition to your exam preparation, you have to include adequate sleeping hours during the prep days, so that you do not reach a zombie state bereft of sleep. Also, never put it too much of last hour cramming lest you might consider dozing off during the exam. Ø Know you exam: The GRE test has 3 sections which have to be given equal weightage. You wou ld really do well, if you are awa re of the exam format and the interface. It makes sure that you do not get a shock of your life, the first time you attempts the GRE exam.
Ø Focus on your weak areas of study: GRE requires you to have impeccable quantitative skills, immaculate reasoning ability and polished writing skills, all of which does not come naturally to many. You have to identify the areas in which you are strong and those which require enhancement and specifically focus your preparation in that direction. You have to guard against laying more emphasis on the areas you are traditionally strong in, while neglecting other comparatively weaker areas of study. This invariably leads to a skewed level of preparation and below standard performance in the final exam. Ø Practice simulated tests: Apart from getting a real life experience of taking a simulated GRE test, it also helps you budget your time, and to pace and strategize the way you should take the exam. You may ha ve your own way of taking exa m and should stick to it, but you should also apply small tricks of elimination, backward answer taking etc. that goes a long way in ensuring a strong performance. Ø Be sure about the schools you are targeting: One of the most critical facets of your GRE preparation is zeroing in on the list of schools you are targeting. With nearly all graduate schools in the United States requiring a GRE score for admission, it becomes vital for you to know the minimum test scores those schools consider as their minimum cut offs. That way, you can streamline your preparation on various specific areas and identify beforehand what exactly you need. You h ave to realize that a relatively high or an above average GR E score might not

promise acceptance to a college but a below par score would undeniably guarantee elimination from most schools. Hence in addition to a great academic record and a good GRE score you have to have a holistic approach to your student life apart from the academic front, which includes involvement in extracurricular and sport related activities. Apart from that, letters of recommendations from your seniors or supervisors in your previous workplace or educational institution or even from renowned professionals play a huge role in balancing the selection in your favour. You must do well to prepare a detailed personal statement tha t features a mongst the application documents. This is an important document which introduces you and says a lot about your passion for the field of study, goals and your ability to meet them. There are many online resources which helps you prepare for the GRE exam and one of them is Gradestack GRE mobile app available on Google Play store. Written May 26, 2014 • View Upvotes Upvote 20
