and smile as the $unday ritual ran its predictable course. 6ffering time and the passing pas sing of the plates were part of the ritual. The curious young boy glanced at the plate as it passed by, by, and, on occasion, occ asion, he deposited a contribution of his own. e did this sparingly, sparingly, though, because from what he saw as the plate passed, he assumed that God did not need much money to keep the big, beautiful church operating. The offering plate and the money that collected there did not seem to have have any connection to the needs of the church, in the young boy%s mind. s he grew into a young man, he became Iuite industrious and kept an eye out for e/tra opportunities to make money and acIuire worldly possessions. s he earned more money and took advantage advantage of profitable investment opportunities, the acIuisition of material goods became the main focus of his life. 6pportunities seemed to appear everywhere he looked. )ith a knack for purchasing items to sell for more than they cost him, he was alway alwayss looking for easy ways to make a profit. e subscribed to the worldly ma/im 4The bigger, bigger, the better,4 better,4 and he found great success and satisfaction in acIuiring and accumulating more and more, which, to him, eIuated to a job well done.

The only way to keep up was by using the world%s system? going into greater debt to purchase more items to sell. )ould-be )ould-be business partners would approach him on a regular basis, trying to get in on the action, asking for a piece of the pie. The reali@ation was difficult for him to understand, for, for, to him, less money meant less happiness. "t seemed to him that God did not want is children to have both happiness and abundant finances. e knew that church projects and missions trips reIuire funding. e could acknowledge that spreading the gospel and raising a !hristian family demanded finances, just as owning and operating his business did. The businessman continued his Iuest to amass wealth, though, and he did so by dividing his material pursuits and his spiritual practices into two different worlds. To him, faith and finances were incompatible. e believed that the two had no connection whatsoever in the natural, and certainly not in the spirit realm.
