Name: Read the following text carefully:
Being about five years old when I came to England, I had few memories of India – I had not formed my Indian identity yet. My first real encounter of racial violence was when I moved into secondary school. Gangs of white youths used to attack coloured students students and only then did Indians form form gangs and retaliate. However, by now I had some idea of the British class structure, and I knew that the others! "whites# were not like them. $hough I was from the same class as they were, I felt myself identified with those above me. I as%ired to their good, commonsense way of life, values and attitudes. By now I was about fifteen years old and was becoming well integrated into the white culture. It was then that I reali&ed that I was leading two lives' that of the Indian at home, and the black man with the white mask outside. (ifficulties arose when, for e)am%le, the norm in the white society was in the belief of individualism!. *ouths were e)%ected to drink, smoke and have girlfriends. $his was not the case in the Indian culture. $he family was a tightly knit and integrated unit within the Indian community. $he belief was that of collectivism!+ life was with the %eo%le. n the one hand I was e)%ected to conform with my white friends and their culture and on the other hand with my family and the Indian community. In my torment I started thinking that, if I was to succeed in a white man-s world, I would have to totally behave like one. It seemed to me that my %arents wanted me to succeed in the white society, yet retain my identity as an Indian. I thought the white society was waiting with their arms to embrace me. It was when I started to date white girls that I reali&ed that this was not so. $he malicious and contem%tuous looks that were received made me reali&e that the white society would only acce%t me at a su%erficial level. If I married a white girl I would be e)communicated from my Indian community and be virtually in the same situation with the white society. Race in Britain,
