SOKE; ANSHU CHRISTA J ACOBSON HEADMISTRESS OF THE BUDO RYU – SCHOOL OF THE WARRIOR WAY 9
The Budo Ryu (School of the Warrior Way) was started in 2004. The main reason for this were in the martial arts community there was very few schools that a new student could go to and not deal with constant politics of martial organizations. This to me is extremely sad to see that people from all over the world that want to learn the real Japanese fighting arts has to constrict themselves to rules and guidelines and not have a place to train that is focused on the true meaning of Budo. In the summer of 2011 The Budo Ryu held the 2 nd Annual Daikomyosai. Daikomyosai is the celebration of illumination from inside to the outside. This is where the training goes in depth within the 7 traditions of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo! Direct teachings of the history of the arts, classical kata as well as the present applications, deeper understandings of these 7 warrior traditions that make up the Budo Ryu - School of the Warrior Way! The Budo Ryu trains in all areas of traditional Japanese bujutsu (old Japanese fighting arts). This includes hand to hand combat, grappling, ground fighting, all traditional weapons of the ninja and samurai, modern weapon applications and tactics, self-defense, self-protection, survival skills as well as mental and emotional conditioning. This directly comes from the 7 warrior tradtions of the school. 10

SOME of the Skills that a student will train in are: Seishinteki ky ōyō (spiritual refinement) Taijutsu (unarmed combat), Kenjutsu (sword techniques), Bō jutsu (stick and staff techniques), Sō jutsu (spear techniques), Naginatajutsu (naginata techniques), Kusarigamajutsu (kusarigama techniques), Shurikenjutsu (throwing weapons techniques), Kayakujutsu (pyrotechnics), Hens ō jutsu (disguise and impersonation), Shinobi-iri (stealth and entering methods), Bajutsu (horsemanship), Sui-ren (water training), B ōryaku (tactics), Ch ōhō (espionage), Intonjutsu (escaping and concealment), Tenmon (meteorology), Chi-mon (geography), Dakentaijutsu (striking body arts), Kosshijutsu (muscle tearing), Kyushojutsu (vital points), Jujutsu (grappling), Koppojutsu (bone breaking), Yonin, Inpo, Tonpo, Shinobi-iri, Ninjutsu (art of stealth). The Daikomyosai was the training in all 7 warrior traditions and showing the students how to flow in and out of them to each specific situation, not just in combat but in life as well. 11

MONOM I - Shinobi Hand Torch Photo above: Anshu with a "Monomi" or ninja scouting hand torch.
When on a night mission within a residence or building, the Shinobi had a small hand torch that they used to be able to see within or to see into. This would help aid in "stealing in". It was small, easily concealable and just as easy to put out in case they felt they were seen. Split a cedar board to get a piece of 4 or 5 Sun (12 or 15 cm). Apply a little sulphur on the tip and hold it out. This is called Monomi Scouting Torch and used by the shinobi to look inside a window or a knothole.

HONOR Standing next to Antique Armor / 17th Century "They say Japan was made by a sword. They say that the old gods dipped a blade into the ocean, and when the pulled it out, four perfect drops fell back into the sea, those drops became the islands of Japan." "I say; Japan was made from a handful of brace men and women. Warriors willing to give their lives for something that seems to have become a forgotten word,.....Honor." - The Last Samurai; Warner Bros. Pictures; 2003 ********************************************* Honor is honesty or integrity in one's beliefs and action; while accepting responsibility for ones own actions. Honor is the recognition of selflessness. To acknowledge this potential or limitation that we have within and gone beyond. Honor is standing up for what you believe in while understanding truth, courage, honesty, loyalty, duty, benevolence and morality as code and living your life by that code in your personal journey of life. Take Care, Be Safe and good Luck in your journey. (bow) 23

Purpose of the Martial Arts By Anshu Christa J acobson 29
PURPOSE OF THE MARTI AL ARTS To understand the purpose of the martial arts training we have to understand the goal towards training; Self-Enlightenment, Self-Empowerment, Self-Defense and Self- Protection of oneself and loved ones. I was once told of an old story of these two master swords man who were closer than brothers. They both mastered the way of the sword, and prepared to start their journey of Musha Shugyo (滃菪几賍). They were going to be separate for many years. So they met one day on the opposite side of this creek, and they agreed that they would re-unite at the same place, at the same date, twelve years later. Twelve years later, at that date they found that the rain and the course of nature had changed that creek to a large raging water stream so there is no way that they can meet at the exact same place. As one of the samurai determined to live up to his vow and to show his incredible level of skill that he amassed over the twelve years. He took a running jump and leaped over the deadly current of the rushing water, safely on the other side. The other samurai walked upstream and hired a boatman to get row him across safely to meet his close friend. The skills that one man spent 12 years of training and refining was duplicated effortlessly with a few pennies. Similarly if your goal is only to “win” or “kill”, than we can just buy a gun rather than investing years of training. This is why students of Budo need to understand that Budo is not just about winning. Next we need to understand that winning is more than just defeating your enemy, it is about perfecting yourself – your personal character – as well as your skills as a martial artist. In Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu (蜟凖焦弗嚧賕); one of the seven warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu, there is a saying: Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari (Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard) physical skills alone no matter how highly developed are not enough. There is always someone more skillful or someone with a dirty trick that will leave you unprepared. But attitude is better than aptitude in actual combat. Without having a strong warrior spirit, courage and determination a high level of skill is useless. So the purpose of training in Budo is to develop the mind and spirit of a warrior and such a strength of character that it wins a battle before it begins. This takes years of training to do. These skills also lead to the ability to rid your self of and not respond to hate, slander, anger, fear, selfishness and jealousy as they are counter productive and self-destructive. Simply put frustration is the first sign of mental weakness. Those that get so frustrated that they have to say and do negative things are clearly mentally weak, and as a warrior and a practitioner of budo, you should not concern yourself with this action as this will also lead you off of true path of Budo. "Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari" (Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard) Anshu Christa Jacobson 30 http://ww.budoryuninjutsu.com
L ife is Choice,... Every option, Every decision, that you make in life, is just like a doorway, You choose which ones you walk through or not, the choice is up to you. Every Doorway, every intersection has a story, and that story is a crucial part towards the journey that you take; not just as a martial artist, but as a person as well. You can choose to be anything that you want to be, you can choose to be negative, or positive, it is up to you. No one that has chosen to be negative, hateful or a victim has ever discovered the secret of the stars, sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit. You must not,...for any reason,... give up the effort to make yourself a better person, or help those that are around you. Creativity, focus, perseverance, dedication and determination will give you the inner strength needed to push through the heavy, and what seems non-moveable doorways of life. I hope that this insight today helps you all in your journey as well as your training in Budo. Take care, Be safe and Good luck in your journey of Budo. Anshu Christa Jacobson 31
SEE WITH Y OUR EY ES – FEEL WITH Y OUR HEART “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts” ----- Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) I hope that you understand today's lesson, look inside to find the truth. Take Care & Be Safe! :) 32
Anshu Christa Jacobson
ILLUSION By Anshu Christa J acobson
33
ILLUSION Illusion of Separation; How many wars have been started from a need for one side to be “right” and to make the other “wrong.” Ancient cultures talk of our connection to each other, yet we treat each other with such little regard. They teach that when you go beneath the surface of “man” you find the true essence of who we are, intertwined at the deepest most fundamental way. This is the only way to bring true happiness, look inside and find the answers. The problem is people do not want to look on the inside, because the inside is where they keep all of their pain, and fear. So they turn to others for answers, they assume that the one that is talking is right, this in itself is an illusion. It is quite possible that the one that is not talking just teaching, is actually saying more than the one that is talking. The body has 7 Chakra. Chakra are said to be "force centers" or whorls of energy permeating, from a point on the physical body and are considered the focal points for the reception and transmission of energies. The "Light" chakra, located in the center of the forehead deals with insight, but is blocked by illusion. This chakra helps you gain knowledge, but it is blocked by things that "you think" is right. This is an illusion. You think that your opinion is correct, when in truth, it is not. It is something that you came up with, formulated some reason for thinking that it is real, when in fact, it is not, it is false thought that you bring into yourself. The greatest illusion in the martial arts, is the illusion of the five elements, and how they are separate. The things that you think are different, are actually one in the same. If you open your mind, and think, you will see that all of the elements are connected. Even metal is simply earth, just refined. Don't be dis-connected from the things that gives you the most joy in your life, spend more time with the ones that give you the most joy. This is another way of opening the chakra and enjoying your life. If you know that 'this' is going to place you in a bad mood, than don't do "this",.simply do and be around those that make you happy and a better person. Not for sure if anyone of you understood the lesson today, but if at least one person out there, understands, than at least I touched the life of one. Thanks for reading today's lesson. Be safe my friends. Anshu Christa Jacobson; Headmistress of the Budo Ryu 34
