PREFACE This book is the continuation of my paper published in December 1980 by "GULA INDONESIA", volume VI Nr. 4 (The Indonesian Sugar Magazine) under the title of: "PEMERAHAN PADA SUATU GILINGAN" (The extraction of a cane mill) It is intended to expediently produce an idea of calculating mill material balance of a tandem, whereas detailed calculations of materials passing through each of the mill in the train are specifically described. The idea came when the company I’d worked for appointed me as a supervisor for the capacity expansion one of the sugar factories owned. The expansion work covers the replacement of the whole mill tandem with a bigger dimension. Therefore it was hopefully concluded that all measurement, including the setting of the mills and all the analysis for the extracted juices and the analysis of last mill bagasse, were purely and correctly implemented during the commissioning. With the help of a computer program, the repeatedly calculations of mass balance for a mill tandem becomes very simple and specially eliminates the long lasting and time consuming work when compared with the use of a calculator. On the other hand the mill material balance can be calculated frequently within relatively short time, especially at the beginning of a campaign when the milling operation already runs smoothly. Which in turn it’ll give us opportunity to make any adjustment for the mill settings to either achieve a better performance or steps for safety precaution against any mill breakage.
