1 Introduction Every time a live flight plan terminates, the FDP sends a message to the PAF/PISTA system containing the information listed below: Sequence number (3 characters, 001 to 999). The FDP assigns automatically the sequence number to the flight plan, restarting it with 001 when it reaches the value 999.
• CallSign (7 characters). • Register (8 characters). • Flight Type (1 character). • Origin (4 characters). • Sid (7 characters). • Aircraft Type (4 characters). • Speed (4 characters). • Destination (4 characters). • Star (7 characters). • Arrival Time (4 characters). • Rfl (4 characters). • Initial Time (17 characters). • Notes (20 characters). • SSR code (4 characters). • Flight duration (4 characters). • Distance (4 characters). • Wake turbulence (1 character). • Navigation equipment (10 characters). • Operator (20 characters). • Up to 25 fixpoints Each of them consisting of: • Fixpoint Name (11 characters). • Fixpoint Overfly level (3 characters). • Fixpoint ETO (4 characters). The connection between the FDPS and the PC is carried out through an asynchronous RS232 line with no parity, 8 bits of information to 9600 bits/s. The billing program starts running automatically when the computer is turned on. It tries to open the COM1 port in reading mode. If the program detects that the port is busy, it opens the COM2 port.

It is necessary that the RS232 line is connected to the PC COM1 / COM2 port used by the program to read the data. If the program achieves to open correctly one of the ports in reading mode, the icon depicted in the Figure 1-1 is shown in the tool bar. Otherwise, The program stops running.
Figure 1-1:
Billing program icon
Whenever the icon is shown in the tool bar the billing program is running, and it checks all the time if the FDP has sent some message to the port opened in reading mode by the program.
Figure 1-2:
Tool bar when the billing program is running
Whenever the program detects that the FDP has sent to it 89 characters (average size of a message), it checks if the 89 characters make a complete message up. If that is the case, the program stores the message in the data base that belongs to the current month. If the 89 characters don’t make a complete message up, the program waits for more characters and just when it detects that there is a complete message, it stores that message in the corresponding data base. The folder C:/Billing/DataBase contains the Access data base Rs232Empty.mdb, which will be used as template in order to generate the monthly data bases. Every month the billing program will generate automatically a new data base called Billmm_yyyy.mdb, where mm is the current month and yyyy is the current year. This data base will
store the flight plans of the corresponding month and year. These data bases will be kept in the same folder where the data base Rs232Empty.mdb is kept, and the user will be able to work with them until he decides to remove them manually. Since the data base Rs232Empty.mdb is used as template in order to create the monthly data bases, if the user want to add a new report, it will have to be done in that data base from Microsoft Access so that the new data bases generated later on already contain those new reports. Companies and unitary prices have to be stored manually in the tables Company and Aircraft respectively belonging to the data base Rs232Empty.mdb.

2.1.1 Billing This option is used to display and print the billing reports (detailed or summary) corresponding to one month (from the day belonging to the initial date to the day belonging to the final date) and a chosen company. If no company is entered, the billing corresponding to all the flights belonging to all the companies for the selected date are included in the report. When the flights list window is opened, it appears empty. When the button Search is pushed, the flights that match the search criterion are shown and the buttons that allow to display and print the billing reports (detailed or summary) are enabled.

2.1.3 New Reports This option is used to display and print all the available reports, even the new reports created by the users in the data base Rs232Empty.mdb. By default the daily billing report and the statistics, both daily and monthly, reports will be shown. If the user has created more reports in the data base Rs232Empty.mdb, those reports will be included in the reports list.
Figure 2-5:
New Reports window
• Reports list: All the reports of the data base Rs232Empty.mdb are listed in it. • Report filter: It is a condition that the query which the report was created with must fulfil (written using Microsoft Access sintax).
• For example, if RptBilling is selected, and we want to get the billing corresponding to the day 27/09/2005, since that report is based in the Billing query and there is a field date in that query, we would have to write Date=’27/09/2005’ in the report filter.
• Moreover, if we also want to select only the flights of the IBERIA company, the report filter would become Date=’27/09/2005’ AND Company=‘IBERIA’.
• Month_Year: Month and year corresponding to the data base which we want to get the report from. Format mm_yyyy. It is a compulsory field.

• We have to keep in mind that if the report was included in the data base Rs232Empty.mdb after the selected data base through entering the month and the year was created, that data base will not contain the report. This one will have to be added to the data base manually from the data base Rs232Empty.mdb, copying and pasting it.
• Button Preview: It shows to the user preview of the report. • Button Print: It prints the report in the predetermined printer for Microsoft Access. • Button Erase Filter: It cleans the report filter. 2.2 Option “Exit” When the user chooses this option, he is asked if he wants to quit the program. If so, the program stops running, the port is closed automatically and the information sent by the FDP is no longer read. Furthermore the program icon vanishes from the tool bar.
Figure 2-6:
Dialog box to quit the program
It is important to keep in mind that if the user wants to close his session or to shut the computer down it is compulsory to quit the program since otherwise Windows detects that the port is blocked in reading mode and does not stop running.
